Sibenik, the "city of Kresimir"
The city of Sibenik, first mentioned in 1066 in documents relating to King Petar Kresimir IV, has been called ''the city of Kresimir''. Known for its walls and towers and for being the birthplace of Faust Vrancic, the inventor of the parachute, the city of Sibenik is recognizable by its largest and most valuable sacred monument: the Cathedral of Santiago, a Gothic Renaissance building of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries whose dome of white stones, like a crown, it is distinguished as a dominant element in the architecture of the city. This cathedral, built for more than 100 years by the laborious hands of the masters, exclusively with stones from the islands of Brac and Korcula, has been added to the UNESCO list due to its original way of construction. A frieze adorned with 74 heads depicting the most important citizens of Sibenik at the time of construction stands out.
