Opatija

Opatija is a town and municipality located at the bottom of Kvarner Bay, just below Mount Ucka, one of Croatia's natural parks. The city is located 13 kilometers from the city of Rijeka, 110 kilometers from Trieste in Italy, and 250 kilometers from Venice in Italy. The mild Mediterranean climate predominates there. It is one of the most beautiful resorts in Croatia. Since the late 19th century, Opatija has been the center of Central European health. The shore of Opatija is about 40 kilometers long and is characterized by its beautiful nature, parks, promenades, old Austro-Hungarian villas, and its beaches. The climate of Opatija led the Austro-Hungarian nobles to build their winter residences in this city in the 19th century, calling it the "Austrian Nice" or "Croatian Monte Carlo". The first hotel in the city dates back to 1840. Today, the villas in Opatija are still built according to the architectural principles of the nobility of the time of Queen Elisabeth (Sissy), and have been converted into hotels along its famous promenade, the 12-kilometre-long Lungo Mare.
